How to Get the Most Accurate 1RM Estimate

Use a challenging set of roughly 2 to 8 reps. Lower-repetition sets generally provide a better estimate of maximal strength because higher-repetition performance is increasingly influenced by individual differences in muscular endurance.

Only count completed reps performed to your normal standard. A squat performed above your usual depth or a bench press completed with significantly altered technique can inflate the resulting estimate.

Use a set performed relatively close to failure. If you stop several repetitions before failure, the calculator may underestimate your actual maximum.

Treat the result as an estimate. Formulas model the relationship between repetitions and maximal strength, but individual lifters can perform differently at the same percentage of their 1RM.

How to Calculate Your One Rep Max

One rep max formulas estimate the heaviest weight you could lift once based on a lighter set performed for multiple repetitions.

For example, suppose you bench press 225 lb for 5 reps.

Using the Epley formula:
1RM = Weight × (1 + Reps ÷ 30)
225 × (1 + 5 ÷ 30) = 262.5

Your estimated one rep max would therefore be approximately 263 lb.

Different formulas produce slightly different results, which is why comparing several estimates can be more useful than treating any single formula as exact.

Squat depth and technique should remain consistent between your test set and normal training. A set performed above your usual depth can produce an estimated max that does not accurately reflect the weight you can squat through your normal range of motion.

Deadlift 1RM
