What are training percentages?

Training percentages express a working load as a percentage of a one-rep max or training max. They help organize intensity while allowing planned progression.

1RM vs training max

A true or estimated 1RM represents maximal performance. A training max is deliberately lower and can make percentage prescriptions more repeatable.

Common percentage ranges for strength training

Lower percentages are often used for technique, speed, or warmups. Moderate-to-high percentages are commonly used for strength work, with repetitions and fatigue managed by the program.

Why rounded loading matters

Exact calculated loads may not be loadable. Rounding to available plates makes the table practical; normal rounding can move a load slightly above or below the exact percentage.

Method note: Percentage loads are arithmetic planning aids, not promises about repetitions possible on a given day.
