Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)

Score the NIH Short Physical Performance Battery balance, walking, and five-chair-stand components.

Record the test

Complete each distinct SPPB component. “Unable / safety stop” is a protocol zero; blank is missing and prevents a total.

A. Balance

B. Usual-pace walk

C. Five chair stands

One protocol, three components

SPPB balance uses side-by-side, semi-tandem, and tandem only—it does not include the CDC Four-Stage test’s one-foot stand. Walking is two usual-pace trials over exactly 4 m, or 3 m when 4 m is unavailable. Chair stands time five consecutive rises with arms folded after first confirming one safe rise.

The chair component is not the 30-Second Chair Stand Test, which counts repetitions. Results from other pages are not imported because protocol details must match.

Scoring

Each component contributes 0–4 points and a complete total ranges from 0–12. Walking and chair times are rounded consistently to hundredths before applying the published bands. A missing component prevents a total; an explicit inability or safety stop may receive the protocol-defined zero. No study enrollment cutoff is presented as a health category.
